In the sixties, women burned their bras and heralded the freedom they suddenly had from binding elastic garments and wires, and chafing. In 2009, women are heralding the freedom they suddenly have from binding wires and chafing of another kind... their glasses. How is this happening? Lasik surgery.
Now, I've worn glasses since I was in grade four. I'm forty five. That's an awful lot of lens cleaner and liniment on those sore spots that always seem to happen behind your ears. I used to be a contact lens wearer too, but strangely, after having three children, they always seemed to bother me and I found myself becoming a glasses wearer again.
So imagine how I'd feel to come across the “You Gotta See This” Video Contest? Abbott Medical Optics Inc. (AMO), a global leader in laser vision correction, wants to know how better vision could improve or has improved people’s lives, and they're willing to put their money where their mouth (or eyes) is... are. All a person has to do to enter, is make a video showing the impact of improved vision. Heck... I'm a shoe-in to win their top prize of $5000.00! Oh sure... I suppose you can enter too, but now that you know I want that top prize... are you sure you think you can beat my entry?
Oh, you can try all right, but since you know I'm going to win the Grand Prize, you might have to be ok with the First Prize of an HDTV package (a $2,500 value) or the Second Prize of The Flip UltraHD™ camcorder (a $199.99 value). Oh... okay. I'll be generous and tell you that while there is only one Grand Prize (mine... we know...) there will be a First and a Second prize given out in each of the three categories for entry. Those categories are:
- “My contacts are getting in the way of my good time”
- “My favorite sport or activity would be so much cooler with better vision”
- “You should see life after the iLASIK® Procedure”
I'm really quite pumped about this. In fact, I think I may also have to tear my bra from my chest, throw it into the fraccy fireplace and bust out in a rendition of something by Helen Reddy that will cause the fraccy children to run screaming from the house in embarassment.
I'm not worried.
They'll come back when they find out I've won the Grand Prize!
